Every year in May, members of the Order of Malta from around the world gather together in pilgrimage in Lourdes, France with malades (French word for people who are seriously ill). Their journey of faith includes rosary processions, Mass at the Grotto, anointing of the sick, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and baths in Lourdes water. It is an extraordinary experience for malades and members of the Order of Malta alike. Sixteen years ago, members of the Order of Malta Western Association took it upon themselves to re-create the Lourdes pilgrimage of joy at St. Anne’s Grotto for all those malades who were not able to travel the great distance to France. Every year in October Lourdes Day is celebrated at St. Anne’s Home. This year, over 300 guests were able to participate in this beautiful and faith filled day. The Most Reverend George Niederauer, Archbishop Emeritus of San Francisco and the Most Reverend William Justice, Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco presided in the company of guest clergy and chaplains of the Order.
